Google X Revealed

picture of Sebastian Thrun (Photograph by Steve Jurvetson)

Imagine a place where a refrigerator can be connected to the Internet so the owner can order food that is almost finish automatically.

Dinner plate can tweet about the menu that you eat. And the robot can go to the office, replacing the 'master' who is lounging at home.

It does look like the setting of a science fiction movie alone. But it's actually a secret laboratory in the world are trying to realize the ideas to become reality. The owner of this secret laboratory is none other than Google.

Quoted from the New York Times, Tuesday, November 15, 2011, the lab called Google X is indeed very secret, even the majority of Google employees do not know it existed.

In the special research New York Times, sources with knowledge of the existence of this lab is to say Google X operates mysteriously, just like the CIA, U.S. intelligence agencies.

Google X is said to have two offices, one for logistics in the Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., and another for the purposes of the robot, was at a secret location.

The leader of this secret facility is the Sebastian Thurn, a robotics expert on artificial intelligence (AI) is the world's top current and became a lecturer at Stanford University.

He created the first car without a driver in the world. In this lab there are also other professors from Stanford, namely Andrew Ng, who apply neuroscience to AI robots and machines that can operate like a human.

The ideas developed by Google X today is still far from reality. But according to the recognition of two informants who had received instruction about the project in this laboratory, there is a product of the lab ready to be opened to the public at the end of this year. Unfortunately, no mention of what exactly this product will be announced.

Google spokeswoman, Jill Hazelbaker, did not respond to the New York Times interviews with dozens of confidential sources from within Google.

"The possibility of this is very interesting, but still it must be remembered that the amount spent on investment is much smaller when compared with the investments that were planted on the core business," she said.

Jonathan Ive, The Man Behind Thin Stylish Products, Corner Round, and Few Buttons of Apple’s Products

The big name of Steve Jobs at Apple covered the brilliant people behind the Apple’s products. Now that the maestro has resigned, one by one other genius character in Apple emerged. One of them was Jonathan Ive, who is he?

Letter from Steve Jobs on August 24, 2011 can not be denied as a hottest topic discussed in various parts of the world. Man, who identified as the icon from Cupertino tech giant decided to resign from the company that has the highest value in the world. In a brief letter, Jobs suggested COO Tim Cook as his replacement.

Yet some doubt the decision since the background of Cook who is not a production person. Bloomberg, for example, stated one of the considerable competitor for Cook as the number one at Apple Inc. is Jonathan Ive (44 years old). No one doubts Job’s contribution in raising Apple, the company which was started in the garage until it becomes the most valuable technology company. But not widely known that in internal Apple the role of designer Jonathan Ive services is crucial.

Ive who came from England, help Jobs brought Apple out of the ruin by the legendary design of the iMac computer. iMac colorful design makes the computer gets a lot of compliments when other brands still used pale color. Ive was involved in the design of Apple’s masterpiece products such as iPod, iPhone, and of course the iPad. Ive, who is known by his friends with nickname "Jony” led Apple's design team since the mid-1990s. Working closely with Jobs, Ive successfully build on Apple's stature with the typical design of products that thin, rounded corners, with few buttons, and the sweep of aluminum on the surface of a thin glass.

People who have worked with Ive portray him as a humble, sweet, quiet, and shy, but also confident, hardworking and brilliant. Paola Antonelli a senior curator for the Museum of Modern Art in New York says that he rarely know the person who so admired and liked by many people like Ive. Ive started his career far from Cupertino. He grew up outside London and studied design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) at Newcastle. After finished his school he founded the design company called Tangerine in London. Through Tangerine, he got his first contact with Apple. In 1992 when Steve Jobs was still on the expulsion from Apple, the company's main designer Robert Brunner employed Ive as a senior designer.

While Jony Ive is a superstar today at Apple, it wasn't always like that. When he was first brought on, he actually lived out his beginning years in the basement designing and experimenting with products with which current Apple heads paid little or no attention. Leander Kahney says, ‘Apple took him out to California and told him things would be great. But the company was tanking and he ended up working on his own in a basement office. He was cranking out weird stuff and filled the space with hundreds of prototypes. None of them were getting made and no one was paying any attention to him or to his work. He was very frustrated.

Things changed when Steven Jobs was brought back into the company he started to turn it around. Jobs got rid of most people and did a complete restructure. At one point, he finally reached Ive's cave. ‘Jobs comes in, looks at all Ive’s amazing prototypes and says, “My God, what have we got here?”’ says Kahney. Jobs swiftly brought Ive in from the cold, moving the designers into a building on campus and investing in the latest rapid-prototyping equipment. He also beefed up Apple’s security, locking down the design studio to prevent leaks and installing a private kitchen so designers wouldn’t talk shop in public. Ive responded by delivering the iMac, a curvy, semi-transparent desktop computer that looked utterly different from anything else on the market. Although it was an immediate hit with users, Ive’s iMac did not quite meet Jobs’ standards of perfection. Its translucent mouse was clumsy and the choice of new USB connection technology caused problems. ‘Jonathan took his share of beatings early on,’ reveals Valarie Sobolewski, a software engineer who worked at Apple for over a decade. ‘To be in Steve’s world, you’ve got to be willing to take a buffeting.’ But by the time the first iPod music player launched in 2001, Ive and Jobs had finally clicked and the sleek, minimalist Apple vibe of today was born.

Ive and Jobs worked together and in some ways contributed to the success of each other. Ive always contact the Jobs and speak the same language with Jobs. It was clear they had strong chemistry. Is Apple going to follow the Job’s advice to appoint Tim Cook as the number one at Apple or whether they will encourage Ive to maintain the design that will be a hit? No one knows about it because until now Apple has not mentioned the company's plans related to withdrawal of Jobs. One rumour said, Ive is also going to leave Apple after Jobs left.

Profile of Tim Cook

Hired by Steve Jobs in 1998, Tim Cook (born November 1st,1960) main responsibility was to oversee the manufacturing of Apple’s computers. The Alabama native has majored in industrial engineering at Auburn University and earned a master’s in business administration at Duke University, Before that he had worked in operations at Compaq Computer Corp.
Under Mr Cook's direction, Apple closed down most of its manufacturing operations and recast itself as a lean and flexible operation. He forged close links with Asian companies who build the hardware, cutting costs and pushing technical boundaries, and supported the move to concentrate sales efforts on a string of high-end retail outlets, which Mr Jobs initially opposed.
Cook served as Apple CEO for two months in 2004, when Steve Jobs was recovering from pancreatic cancer surgery. Cook also serves on the Board of directors of Nike.
In January 2007, Cook was promoted to COO. In 2009 Cook again served as Apple CEO for several months while Steve Jobs took a leave of absence for a liver transplant.
In January 2011, Apple's Board of Directors approved a third medical leave of absence, requested by Steve Jobs. During that time, Cook was responsible for most of Apple’s day-to-day operations while CEO Steve Jobs made most major decisions.
Cook’s temper is considered calm, he is a quiet man but— deadly. Cook is relatively withdrawn. A former college classmate described him as "not a real social person. Cook can be brutal in meetings. Cook never raises his voice, but his default frown and long, uncomfortable silent stares hint at the demanding leader underneath"I've seen him shred people," says a former executive who now works for another consumer electronics company and refused to be quoted by name. "He asks you the questions he knows you can't answer, and he keeps going and going. It isn't funny, and it's not fun."
While a select group can claim to understand Cook at work, almost nobody claims to know much about his life outside Apple. A lifelong bachelor, he lives in a rented house in Palo Alto, vacations in places like Yosemite and Zion national parks, and shows few visible signs of wealth despite having sold more than $100 million of Apple stock over the years. He's known for being the first in and last out of the office and for his grinding international travel schedule, and when he isn't working he tends to be in the gym, on a hiking trail, or riding his bike.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

Steve Jobs's Resignation Letter

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve"

Indeed, it is very short resignation letter for a great man who set the course for mobile computing and digital entertainment. Since Bill Gates retired from Microsoft in 2008, Jobs was the last of those early pioneers still leading the industry.
Most people are lucky if they can change the world in one important way, but Mr. Jobs, in multiple stages of his business career, changed global technology and media in multiple ways on multiple occasions. And that changed the way people live.
And that's why the day Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple isn't like the day a typical CEO resigns.

The ON/OFF Switch could be the problem

Your desktop computer suddenly couldn't start. You open the casing and find that the processor fan can't rotate, the indicator LED also dead. The most common is the power supply problem. However, it didn't happen to me last week. I tried hard to find the problem even changed the power supply but nothing worked. I persistently thought that the problem come from electricity not from the motherboard. After several unused efforts I finally found that the problem was the cable connection inside the connector which connect the ON/OFF switch from the casing into the mother board was loose (see pictures). Only need to tighten the connection and finally all worked well. You can see it was an embarrassing moment but at least I can share with you that this kind of condition can really happen.
